Cleaning Messenger Bags
Regular cleaning of your First Messenger Bag will help to protecting it from premature wear and tear.
Cleaning the First Messenger Bag does not have to be complex. Follow the following steps to realize a pristine outcome:
Step 1: Clear Away Loose Dirt and Debris
Before washing, remove loose dirt and dust. Turn the messenger bag inside out. Then, shake it over a trash bin to eliminate crumbs and debris trapped inside the fabric. If necessary, utilize a wet cleaning soft-bristle brush to clean the inner lining.
Or, gently sweep away those contaminants using a microfiber dust wand/dusting towel. Wipe vertically, from the top to the bottom. Then, wipe in circular motions, from the top to the bottom, too.
By removing those contaminants, you avoid pushing them deeper into the messenger bag during cleaning: You also avoid spreading them.
Step 2: Pre-Treat Stains (If Necessary)
If your messenger bag has visible stains, pre-treat the stains prior to washing to enhance stain removal.
a. Greasy and/or oily stains: For these stains, use watered-down paint thinner formula (or mineral spirit, mineral turpentine, petroleum spirit, turpentine substitute, solvent naphtha, or white spirit) and a clean upholstery wet cleaning towel/sponge/glove.
Pour a small amount of paint thinner in a container. Then, add equal amount of water.
Dip upholstery wet cleaning towel/sponge/glove in the container containing the watered-down paint thinner (or the mineral spirit, mineral turpentine, petroleum spirit, turpentine substitute, solvent naphtha, or white spirit), and gently rub it into the stain. Sprinkle salt, baking soda, or cornmeal on the stain. Then, allow it to sit overnight (or several hours).
Then, vacuum this section. Or, use fresh, damp upholstery wet cleaning towel/sponge/glove to gently rub only the stain area.
b. Ink stains: Remove ink stain/s by using rubbing alcohol mixed with water – or by using hand sanitizer. Spray (apply) the solution (or the hand sanitizer) on the stain. Allow the solution to sit for up to several minutes.
Then, blot cautiously using a damp, clean upholstery wet cleaning towel/sponge/glove.
Please note: Blot means you should not wipe; instead, gently press the microfiber towel on the stain for the towel to absorb. Blotting cautiously helps to avoid spreading the stain onto the fabric.
c. Sweat stains: Mix mild detergent with warm water and apply the mixture on the stains. Let it sit for several minutes. Then, rinse.
d. Coffee and other drinks, food, and mud stains: Dilute the stain using cool water. Then, blot using upholstery wet cleaning towel/glove. Dab (apply) some upholstery cleaner (such as cloth upholstery cleaner).
Allow it to sit for five (5) to 15 minutes. Blot again using upholstery wet cleaning towel/glove to lift up more of the stain.
The stain could still be visible. Hence, apply some upholstery cleaner using upholstery wet cleaning towel/glove. Then, add some warm water. Rinse using a clean upholstery rinsing towel/glove.
e. Blood stains: With blood stains, do not use hot water or upholstery cleaner, because doing so will set the stains.
Choose clean upholstery wet cleaning towel/sponge/glove. Soak the towel/sponge/glove in cool water. Then, blot the towel/sponge/glove on the blood stain.
Rinse the towel/sponge/glove in cool water. Again, blot as desired until the stain lifts from the upholstery.
For more set-in period blood stains, use a solution of 20% volume hydrogen peroxide. Dilute this solution, 1 part to 6 parts cool water.
Soak upholstery wet cleaning towel/sponge/glove in the diluted solution. Then, blot at the blood stains.
6. Dye stains: These are the stains that bleed or transmit color onto your seat. Spot-treat these stains using a paste of dry oxygen-based bleach and a few drops of water.
Apply the paste over the stained area. Let it work for at least one (1) hour.
Vacuum away the powder. Or, wipe away using upholstery wet cleaning towel/sponge/glove. Repeat as desired.
If your messenger bag does not have the stains, skip this step and progress to washing.
Step 3: Comprehensive Cleaning
Materials Specifically Needed
1. Cloth/canvas/leather material upholstery cleaner
2. Water
3. Microfiber towel/sponge/glove
a. Clean Vertically or Horizontally
Starting at the top of the messenger bag, lightly spray/apply upholstery cleaner. Then, gently wipe vertically using an upholstery wet cleaning towel/sponge/glove.
Hold the towel/sponge/glove and extend your arm to top of the bag.
Bring the towel/sponge/glove straight down to clean. Return your hand to the top of the bag parallel (next) to the part you have just cleaned.
Wipe another vertical line down. Continue to wipe the bag this way until the seat is completely cleaned.
Please note: Aim not to use the edges of the towel to clean or dry. Do not also saturate the messenger bag with the upholstery cleaner. The reason is that it will take too long for the messenger bag to dry, enabling mold and mildew growth.
Most notably is that specific upholstery cleaners should be mixed with warm water. Follow the directions on the upholstery cleaner bottle/label with regard to the precise ratio of the upholstery cleaner solution to water.
A spray bottle is the best way to apply the upholstery cleaner. It goes without saying the reason is that the spray bottle empowers you to control the amount of cleaner applied to the upholstery.
b. Rinse
Spray (wet) a fresh upholstery rinsing towel with water. Ensure the towel is slightly damp. Then, use the damp towel to rinse vertically and then horizontally.
Rinse and wring out the upholstery rinsing towel often, and change the water as it becomes unclean.
c. Dry
Let the cloth upholstery air dry by leaving the windows open.
To accelerate the drying process, you can use an upholstery drying towel. Or, set up a circulating fan close by. Drying helps in preventing water spots.
